At St. Francis Hospital, one of our established Magnet® hospitals, the Obstetrics Post-Partum department is a 34-bed unit. We take care of both the mother and baby two hours after delivery. We have what is called a “trans nurse”. They live on L&D and go to all the deliveries to make sure the baby is okay. If the baby is not, they perform the care needed, and get them transferred to NICU if necessary. There is also a lactation team who helps the mother and baby with breastfeeding. We will take Antepartum patients that are less than 20 weeks if needed. We will sometimes take a gynecology patient and will take a re-admit with a post- partum diagnosis. We care for mothers and babies and have started couplet care in the NICU recently.
We take higher risk/acuity patients and patients on magnesium sulfate, or postpartum hemorrhages. Our department’s mission is to care for moms and babies, while providing the best experience possible.
